Chapter IV

How to Control your Thoughts

Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water.” ~ Bruce Lee

What are you thinking of?

Imagine a box filled with something. Shake it and it creates a rattling noise. As you shake it more, it creates a bigger racket. Yet, you still don’t know what’s inside, do you?

Your conscious mind is the box. It is closed and filled with thoughts. Unless you open it, you will not be able to see what’s inside.

An open mind strengthens your actions.

When it rains or fogs, the windshield of your car gets wet or misty and you can’t see clearly. Will you continue driving without being able to see what’s ahead? No, you don’t. What should you do then?

You turn on the wipers and it clears the windshield. Now you can see what lies ahead and reach your destination without delay or fear.

The thoughts in your conscious mind are like the mist. It overcrowds your mind and creates a fog. Opinions of

Chapter III

Thoughts can make you fail or win

My body has certainly wandered a good deal, but I have an uneasy suspicion my mind has not wandered enough.” ~ Noel Coward

Keep your mind clear.

When an athlete is taking part in a race, what is going on in his or her mind? Is she thinking about the possibility that she may stumble and fall?

When a golfer is taking aim to putt, is he or she thinking about the gathering clouds and wondering if it will rain?

No. Their minds are blank. They are focused on the action they are about to perform. There is no room for thoughts.

Thoughts can be distracting. You think and then you rationalize so that you can come up with enough excuses to console yourself in case you fail.

Now, this may seem like advice that is contradicting to what you’ve always been told.

“Think before you act.”

Chapter II

What is visualization?

Life is like music. It must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule.” ~ Samuel Butler

Life is about making choices.

What should I do? Should I do what I think is right? Or should I just do what I feel is right? Do I follow my head or do I follow my heart?

You may have asked yourself these questions whenever you have to make a choice, which is quite often. After all, life is all about making choices.

So what do you do? Do you listen to your heart or your mind?

There are many interpretations of this dilemma. One is to classify your choices as rational and emotional. Another way is to say that your heart could be wrong because it feels what is right but your mind knows what is really right. Yet another interpretation is to call what your heart tells you as your instinct or intuition, and what your mind tells you as your knowledge and experience.

Know your mind.

Chapter I

The ‘I’

Know thyself.” ~ Socrates

It starts with you.

Look in the mirror and tell me what do you see?

Do you see hope, happiness and potential? Or do you feel like looking away? Are you afraid that you will see weakness, laziness, inadequacy or a lack of confidence?

Do you like what you see when you look deep into your eyes? Or does it scare you to see the emptiness that lies within you and ahead of you in your future?

Look within yourself to know who you are. You are not merely an engineer, an entrepreneur, a player, a pilgrim, a student, a salesperson, a traveler or a teacher.

You are not just someone who goes to work and is defined by your profession. You are not someone who was born with talents and is therefore defined by your birth or your circumstances. You are not someone who is defined by your physical body or your social status or your material belongings.

You define who you are.
